1979 Clenet Introduction
Inspired by the iconic Mercedes-Benz 540K (produced from 1936 to 1939) the Series I Clenet was a 250-vehicle limited production two-passenger roadster. It was designed and built in Santa Barbara California from 1975 to 1980 by Alain Clenet, a former designer with AMC Motors. Perhaps stoked by the iconic style, limited production, or the hyper-enthusiasm of the automotive press, celebrities and oil rich Sultans clamored to pay Alain a “hyper-price” for vehicles not yet in production.

Series I production number 216
An exceptional and historic offering representing one of the most exclusive commissions in the marque’s storied lineage—one of only two identically specified vehicles produced: collectively known as the “Doublemint Twins.” Painstakingly crafted at Clenet Coachwork's’ Santa Barbara facility, this vehicle showcases the finest elements of 1930s-inspired design, fused with late-20th-century technology.
Featuring a bespoke Magnolia-colored leather hardtop (in addition to the conventional convertible top), matching bodywork, 1,500-year-old German walnut veneers, Nardi Torino steering wheel, and English lamb’s wool carpeting, this is more than a neoclassic. With only 4,250 original miles, it is unquestionably drivable art. Rarely does an opportunity arise to acquire a Clenet of this provenance, exclusivity, and state of preservation. Not simply a luxury automobile, but a singular piece of automotive history, representing pride-of-ownership collectability and timeless design excellence.
Collectors understand: moments like this are rare. To encounter a Clenet Series I Roadster—especially one of the famed twins—in near-new condition, four decades after its birth, is not simply a chance to acquire a car, but to preserve a legend.

Clenet Day (2003) “Honoring the Prototype”: Attracting a “Cluster” of more than two dozen proud Clenet owners from across the country. Here is an image you (or anyone not born into wealth) are unlikely to be able to replicate. It represents the fulfilled dream of a creative, unique and fearless artist who designed, built and marketed (at Rolls Royce level pricing), seemingly pondering his accomplishment while sitting on the over-the-top-quality automobile that you can afford, and can continue to fulfill the dream of your own.

Cornerman Klan: Spring 1979 celebrating the remodeling of Columbia Center mall in Kennewick, Washington. There, his two new Clenet’s (#215 @ 216) would remained on display, “protected” from curious shoppers, and their sticky-fingered children by velvet ropes. The mall was remodeled in 1997, when both were sold at auction to savvy automobile collectors. Number 215 last changed ownership in 2003,: It’s twin, #216 in 2011, when sold to a collector in Norway.
